Bighorn sheep

California bighorn sheep can be seen on a regular basis in the Lower Deschutes Wildlife Area in the section of the Deschutes River upstream of Harris Canyon. The primary access to that area is by boat or bicycle. The bighorn sheep are in the southern half of the wildlife area, but in the northern section, viewers can see mule deer and upland gamebirds. In the spring, it's also a good place to see wildflowers and songbirds. Camping is available at Deschutes River State Recreation Area at the mouth of the Deschutes River, slightly more than one mile downstream from the wildlife area. To reach the wildlife area, which is 17 miles east of The Dalles, take the Celilo exit from Interstate 84 and continue four miles east to Deschutes River State Recreation Area.
