BIGHORN SHEEP

2011 FORECAST
The long-term outlook for bighorn sheep is good, with approximately 300 bighorns in two populations in the Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills. Once native to western Nebraska, bighorn sheep were reintroduced in 1981. Unfortunately, disease losses are limiting herd growth.

PERMITS
• One lottery and one auction permit authorized for 2011
• Only residents age 12 and older are eligible to apply for permit
• Lottery application fee – $25 (nonrefundable)
• Lottery application period – April 18 - Aug. 5
• Lottery drawing date – Aug. 30

LOTTERY AND AUCTION
Proceeds from lottery entries and auctions have raised more than $800,000 for the Bighorn Sheep Program. These proceeds are a critical revenue source for the program.

BIGHORN SHEEP HUNTING AREA
All of Banner, Box Butte, Dawes, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan, and Sioux counties.
