Anybody care to share any info they have on good zones to hunt Bighorn in Wyoming. I'm not asking for anyone to give up their prime spot but any info would be helpful to me. I am a nonresident and like most sheep hunters I am just building my points till I get drawn (luckily I have youth on my side). Feel free to recommend guiding services as well! Thanks

MN Hunter,
Obviously, this is just my opinion. I am no expert. Areas 3, 4, 5, 10, and 23 are the traditional hotspots for big rams. I think that if you look in GSCO magazine for the past couple of years, this is pretty evident by the number of applications and ram quotas each respective area gets. I would not overlook areas 1 and 2. They are a bit more rugged (steeper with tougher access)and therefore harder to hunt, but they have some really nice rams too. The odds of drawing are also much better, especially without max prefference points. I drew in area 2 in 2001 and took a good ram. I had max points and had been applying for 11 years. My guide was Chris Nielson and outfitter was Morning Creek Outfitters owned by John Porter. Chris was great and I have no complaints. Really a fun and knowledgeable guy. I saw several legal rams in an area where some residents had just quit hunting because they saw none. Chris and John do extensive scouting and really know the area and where the rams are hiding. B. Joe Coy is another solid outfitter in all of those areas. I think that the bottom line is really doing homework on the outfitter you want to hunt with and then taking their advice. They are in the area and know where they are seeing the most and best rams. I had been applying in area 3 forever when John advised trying area 2. Second year of appling in 2 and I drew. Good Luck- HM |

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. I will look into areas 1 and 2 and maybe draw sooner. Congrats on your Ram as well. MN Hunter |
