I just booked a hunt for the three different types of Tur in Russia with ProfiHunt for 2005. I would appreciate pointers from anyone regarding hunting in this area. Thanks,

IRH,

I have not done this hunt myself, but many of my friends have.

The Eastern (Dagestan) tur seems a pretty high success rate species, whereas the Western (Kuban) tur seems more chancy. The mid Caucasian tur seems about the same success rate as the Western.

Whichever you are trying for, beware, all of my friends that have done this hunt say that this is the steepest country they have ever been in.

You should also try and pick up a Caucasian chamois tag while there, and if you are going in the fall, also inquire about the maral stag, roedeer, and brown bear. You should be able to add these on a trophy fee basis only.

What gun are you planning on taking? A .300 REM SAUM would be a great choice!

H.M.

IowaRamHunter:

Sounds like you've put together a nice game plan for getting the Turs. I hunted the eastern one many years ago. It has to rate as one of the most difficult hunts available due to the extremely steep mountains. On the trip with me were three other terrific hunters (Ray Bond, Ingrid Poole and Bill Poole). We came out of there with 50% success, myself and Bill Poole from San Diego.

I'm sure that rifle you bought at the Conklin dinner Friday night would do well on this series of hunts!

Hugh May: You must have been at the Conklin Dinner at FNAWS? If not, it's coincidental that you recommend the 300 Rem saum....for I purchased a Bansner 300 Rem saum at the dinner....hopefully, it'll work for me as you recommend. Thanks, Craig

Ramdreamer: I appreciate the "heads up" on the hunt....as you probably noticed my "physique" at the Conklin dinner, I better start "working out" for this hunt...I guess that's my incentive...Thanks, Craig
