MOUNTAIN HUNTING AWARDS GET SCI ENDORSEMENT
Safari Club International to Sponsor Trophy Awards at 5th Annual Hunter & Outfitter Convention
The conservation and hunting-rights protection group Safari Club International (SCI) has partnered with sheep and goat conservation group Grand Slam Club/Ovis (GSCO) for the presentation of the 2009 GSCO Trophy Awards. The awards, which will be presented at the 5th Annual Hunter & Outfitter Convention in Las Vegas, recognize the hunters who have taken the highest-scoring trophies of sheep and goats from around the world. The SCI scoring method is used for the awards.
“We’ve always had a good relationship with SCI, and this is just another opportunity for both organizations to work together in a capacity that promotes legal, fair-chase hunting to our combined members,” said GSCO director Dennis Campbell. The awards will be presented at a brunch on Friday, February 20, 2009.
According to SCI Hunting Awards Committee co-chairman Warren Parker, GSCO’s Trophy Awards Program is an excellent example of the success of SCI’s unique record keeping system. “The SCI scoring system does not penalize an animal for asymmetrical differences, which are common in both sheep and goats. SCI is proud to join with GSCO in recognizing mountain hunters and documenting our hunting heritage.”
Any GSCO member or member/outfitter may enter a ram or goat for consideration by sending in an official SCI score sheet signed by an SCI Master Measurer. Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards are presented for International Sheep, International Capra (goat), North American Sheep and North American Sheep (Archery). In the North American sheep categories, awards will be presented for Dall, Stone, Rocky Mountain bighorn, California bighorn and desert bighorn.
SCI and GSCO have also partnered to introduce a record book of mountain trophies. Mountain Game of the World Record Book, Volume I is scheduled to be published in time for SCI’s Annual Hunters’ Convention in 2010, and trophies submitted through February 21, 2009 (the final day of the 2009 Hunter & Outfitter Convention) will be eligible.
The 5th Annual Hunter & Outfitter Convention will be held February 18 – 21, 2009 at Bally’s Las Vegas. For more information about the convention or entering the 2009 Trophy Awards competition, visit www.wildsheep.org.
