Friday, April 7, 2006 Wildlife Digest Bighorn fraternity receives award The Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn, a southern Nevada conservation organization with a 40-year commitment to Nevada's wildlife, has been named recipient of the annual Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award. Given by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, the award is annually given to an individual or organization that has demonstrated significant results toward conservation, management or enhancement of wildlife in Nevada. The award was given for the work the organization and its members did during 2005 in funding and constructing water developments that provide water sources for desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife in remote mountain ranges in the southern portion of the state. Last year, the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn assisted with funding for five water development projects and members of the organization provided 1,500 hours of time in assisting with their construction. Typically the work was done in hot, dry and dusty conditions in extremely rugged terrain. Established in the early 1960s, the organization has a long history of assisting the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with programs to restore habitat and establish water development projects for desert bighorn sheep. The award is named after the late Wayne E. Kirch of Las Vegas, who served on the Fish and Game Commission for more than 25 years, the longest tenure ever on the board.
