The true Marco Polo is found in the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan. It's close cousin the Tian Shan Marco Polo can be hunted in the Tian Shan mountains of Krygyzstan. The difference between the two animals is essentially the horn length. The Marco Polo having the larger. wider horns.
While a 60"+ Marco Polo is the dream of every Marco Polo hunter, realistically very few hunters achieve that goal. A more realistic goal is a mature ram in the high 50" range. Where as with the Tian Shan Marco Polo a ram in the low 50s is what can be expected with a 56"+ ram being a real monster.
The hunt for the two species vary quite a bit. The Marco Polo hunts in Tajikistan are conducted at very high altitudes and most hunters can typically only hunt for four or five days before calling it quits. Fortunately Marco Polo are not a rare species and seeing over 500 animals in a day is not uncommon. Hunters cover vast areas by 4wd vehicles and then make a stalk once a good trophy is selected.
The Tian Shan Marco Polo hunt in Krgyzstan is a different hunt altogether. The hunt is conducted at lower altitudes and there is no problem with running out of oxygen and difficulty with breathing. Our hunts are conducted on horse back and are typically eight full days of hunting. On these hunts Mid Asian Ibex and Wolf can also be hunted. The Tian Shan Marco Polo is identical to the Marco Polo except for the shorter horns. They do have a bit more mass though.
There is also quite a difference in price (several thousand dollars) between the two Marco Polo hunts, with the Marco Polo hunt being the more expensive hunt.
US Fish and Wildlife does not distinguish between the two sheep and both are classified as Marco Polo albeit from two different countries. A CITES Import permit is required to import either of these trophies into the US and we help hunters with all the paperwork and process to apply for their permits.
Below are video clips for both Marco Polo in the Pamirs and Tian Shan Marco Polo from Kazakhstan. Take your pick, they are both fantastic trophies:
