I'm looking to get a new pair of boots for sheep hunting this year and was wondering what other hunters are wearing? Might help to narrow things down a bit as there seems to be an endless number of boots. Thanks.

Hi Finley,
I've had good luck with Vasque. I tried Danner but they killed my feet, I need more room in the toe box than Danner gives. I also purchased a pair of Lowa Sheep Hunters last year, but have not had time to break them in yet. Good luck, I know this boot search is a nightmare - what works well for someone else may not work for you at all. |

I went in to Anchorage this evening so I thought I'd stop by REI to look at what they had. The guy that helped me turned out to be a sheep hunter as well and recommended
La Sportivas Trango S GTX. These things are unbelieveably light and they seemed alot more comfortable to move around in then some of the other mountaineering boots. They aren't much to look at, bright red and black, but seem to have alot of promise. I'll have to see if I can find some of those Lowa Sheep Hunters to look at. Thanks. |

I have had very good luck with Montrail Moraines. Itis a sightly heavier boot and takes some time to break in. However, once broken in, they are incredible for sheep hunting. They are made for backpacking heavy loads and "light mountaineering".
I am a big guy and they flex just enough for me to be very comfortable on trails, as well as side hilling very steep shale slopes. I tried the "plastic boots", but found them extremely uncomfortable for my feet. Your feet may be different. Check out the Moraines at Montrail.com and then give them a call. They have sure made a difference in the comfort of my feet on sheep hunts. |

Obviously you are getting a number of suggestions so there are a few good boots out there. I have two pairs of the same boot made by Meindl. They are the "Canada Pro", waterproof, (they really are), rugged, great traction, high tops and extremely comfortable.

I can confirm that the Meindl boots in the Canada pro. are a good choice. They can double on other hunts as well. If you are going to be sheep hunting every year go with a plastic boot. You won't be sorry. I use koflach boots in the "Hunter" model. Bring extra shoe laces as the shale rock is sharp!
