I am always looking for another reason to buy a gun so I was wondering what some of you are using for sheep rifles. I have been thinking about having a rifle built and just trying to decide on a cartridge and action. I have several Rem 700s and would probably lean that way but I would consider about anything. Thanks. Bruce

7mm Remington Magnum (shooting 160 Nosler Partitions).
Remington 700 LH action (south paw shooter) and original barrel. Mag-na-ported. Brown Precision fiberglass stock. Finally broke down and had it teflon coated earlier this year (2nd refinish job in 3 decades of use). Two of the three mountain hunts last year did in the previous re-blue job. 14 sheep taken with it, so far... |

Brown Precision .300 win mag. - the only rifle I own. I've had it since 1990. Light, accurate, and I've taken 7 rams with it along with mule deer, elk, caribou, and pronghorn. I can't say enough about Mark Brown's company.

I just took a great Stone ram using a Kimber Montana in 7 MM WSM. I shoot 140 gr. ballistic tips or their bonded equivalent at 3325 FPS. The rifle is light, well built, very accurate, weatherproof, and a very good value in today's rifle market. All I did to it was lighten the trigger pull to around 3 lbs. It shoots consistent 3/4" 3 shot groups or better. I added a Leupold light (8.8 oz.) 3X9 scope with a BCS system out of their custom shop. It was not that expensive and I just knocked off a tremendous ram at 476 yards. I could get no closer and had extensively practiced out to 400 yds. It works well and is a light and deadly sheep rifle/scope combination. I'm 52, so it's not like I have the eyes of a 20 year old anymore. This is a tremendous value for the money from Kimber.

Actually those are three of the cartridges I have been pondering on. I have a 7mm Rem that shoots great and would work just fine. For some reason I still think I need a "special sheep rifle". Noslertech I have looked at the Kimbers and really like them. I have heard differing thoughts on there accuracy. Seems some shoot really well and some are lacking in accuracy. Sounds like you have a good one.

Why do you need a "special sheep rifle"?I use a Browning 7mm Rem Mag with a Boss and shoot 165gr. sierra gamekings. Its is a tack driver.I've taken two sheep with this (one at 453 yards strait down), and also harvested moose, elk, deer, bear, and bou with it.I recommend you find a rifle you can shoot good and stick withit nomatter what name is on the barrel.

Full Curl, I agree. I guess need it isn't the right word to use. I have lots of rifles I don't need but I am always looking for something different.

257 WBY magnum Mark V ultralight lefty. It is a lighter round than some prefer, but I have enjoyed it so far.
