Bighorn Sheep Enhancement Licenses To Be Auctioned and Raffled

The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) is assisting the Department of Game and Fish with an auction and raffle of two bighorn sheep licenses. Proceeds from the auction and raffle are used for bighorn sheep research, management and propagation in New Mexico.

One license to hunt a Rocky Mountain or desert bighorn sheep will be auctioned during the Feb. 5-8, 2009 WSF National Convention in Salt Lake City, UT. For more information, please visit their Web site at www.wildsheepfoundation.org/. By June 1, 2009, the successful auction winner will choose one of four hunts offered. The license fee is included for the successful auction winner. See below for detailed hunt information.

Another license to hunt Rocky Mountain or desert bighorn sheep will be awarded through a raffle. The successful raffle winner will choose one of the remaining hunts not chosen by the auction winner. The license fee is included for the successful raffle winner. See below for detailed hunt information. The date and location of the drawing will be announced.

Raffle tickets will be sold through the New Mexico Chapter of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (NMFNAWS) for $20 each. Deadline to purchase tickets is June 20. To purchase tickets, send a check or money order to Lanny Rominger, 9117 Luna del Oro NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111, or call him at (505) 821-5064. Ticket stubs will not be provided. NMFNAWS will complete and enter all orders not accompanied by tickets.

The raffle winner does not have to be present to win. Licenses may be used either by the recipient or any individual of the recipient’s choice through sale, barter or gift. The bag limit for these hunts is any one ram. These hunts do not count as once-in-a-lifetime hunts.

Here's a bit a twist...

I just did my on-line applications this morning. It appears that they are not really hitting applicants with the charge for the entire fee up front, not exactly anyway. It seems that they are indeed charging the application fee ($12 for a non-resident, $9 for a resident) at the time of submitting the application. But, I got this pop-up when selecting the species:
Full Fee Up Front Requirement
The full license fee for this species will be charged to your credit card after the application deadline. Unsuccessful applicants' credit cards will be refunded the license fee once draw results are determined. For more information, please refer to the Big Game and Trapper Rules and Information booklet.

So it appears that the balance of the license fee will be charged to the credit card used for applying, sometime after the April 8th application deadline.

Just thought I'd give those of you that have not applied yet a "heads-up".

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, APRIL 8, 2009:

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 17 FOR BIG-GAME LICENSES, PERMITS

SANTA FE -- The Department of Game and Fish has extended the deadline to apply for big-game licenses and permits to Friday, April 17, in response to delays caused by extreme pressure on the agency's telephones and computer server.

Many customers who waited until the last few days before the original April 8 deadline were not able to connect by computer to obtain a new Customer Identification Number. The number is required this year for everyone applying for licenses and permits. The free numbers only can be obtained online or at a Department office in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Raton, Roswell or Las Cruces. Two days before the original deadline the Department Web site recorded more than 1.6 million hits, almost three times the daily average.

Department office telephone lines also were deluged with calls about the Customer ID Number, forgotten passwords and other questions.

The Department is expecting to receive more than 150,000 applications for about 50,000 available licenses and permits for deer, elk, antelope, javelina, ibex, Barbary sheep and bighorn sheep.

Online applications must be received by 5 p.m. MDT April 17. Paper applications must be postmarked by April 17 or delivered to the Department office in Santa Fe by 5 p.m. MDT April 17.

Online applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid missing the deadline because of forgotten passwords or other computer-related issues at the last minute. Late applications will not be accepted.

Applicants are reminded that everyone applying for a public-land license or permit, or purchasing a license via a private land authorization or the Valles Caldera must first obtain a free Customer ID Number online at www.wildlife.state.nm.us or in person from any Department office. This number must be included on each application, paper or online, or the application will be rejected.

All applicants who were licensed to hunt deer or elk, or to hunt or trap furbearers in the 2008-2009 seasons must have submitted a harvest report to be eligible for the upcoming drawing. Hunters and trappers who did not report by the deadlines -- Feb. 15 for deer and elk hunters, April 7 for furbearer hunters and trappers -- can still participate in the 2009-2010 drawings if they submit their harvest survey and pay an $8 late fee before applying. Hunters who fail to report their 2008-2009 harvest results -- successful or not -- will have their 2009-2010 applications rejected. Harvest reports can be submitted online at www.newmexico-hunt.com or by calling toll-free (888) 248-6866.

Results will be available in early June on the Department Web site or in person at any Department office.

To apply for a hunt or for more information, please visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us, or call (505) 476-8000.

Application tips:

Don't wait until the last day, hour or minute to get your Customer Identification Number and apply, whether online or on paper.
Write down your user name, password and Customer Identification Number and keep them in a safe, accessible place.
Apply from your home computer rather than your work computer. Web site pressure is greatest during working hours.
Apply during odd hours. 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. is best.
Write down your chosen hunt codes and have them handy when you apply, instead of trying to look them up in the Rules & Information Booklet while online.
If you use the online Rules and Information Booklet, download it to your hard drive and access it from there while applying to relieve pressure on your Web browser.
If you cannot connect on your first try, all available spaces on the server are busy. Wait a little while and try again.

The auction hunter earlier this week confirmed that he will hunt a Rocky Mountain Bighorn on the Wheeler Peak (Unit 53).

As such, the following hunts will be available to the winner of the raffle tag. Note that one of these options is for a Desert Bighorn tag!

The raffle has been drawn. I've been told the winner's name, but I do not know him or where he is from.

The refunds from the draw just hit my credit card account today.

RamDreamer, Who won the raffle, or is it still a secret? New Mexico is kinda slow with this announcemnet for such a high profile tag. Its not listed on any internet site whatsoever.

I purchased a couple chances in the drawing and half the fun for me, b/c i most likely will not ever be drawn, is just knowing i have a chance. But i at least like to know the drawing date and time, so that i can get the excitement juice.
RamDreamer, Your the only person i know on the internet who knows who won and then you didnt post it either......?

Thanks, Reuben. I was wondering. I'm aware of another gentleman with the last name of the winner from Maryland, but not the first... Maybe a son or brother? Interesting.

I don't want to reveal the name here as I've only seen it in private communications, not public, and I've not talked to him personally.
